Normally around this time of year we’d be out after dark, braving the cold to see the bright lights and installations for Vivid Sydney. We’re pumped for the festival to return this August, but in the meantime, here are some cool things to check out this June.

Dance the night away at an adults-only neon party amongst glowing jellyfish 

With SEA LIFE GLOW

A glow-in-the-dark wonderland for adults? Sign us up! This winter, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium is putting on one heck of a party with pop-up bars, dancefloors, magicians, glow-in-the-dark dancers, and face painting – all for adults and after dark.

Hit up the bars and food stations and enjoy entertainment amongst an underwater world of glowing corals, bioluminescence and sea creatures before continuing the party with late night DJ sets.

Have your fortune told by a virtual ghost in a mysterious laneway 

With We Are All Astonishingly Wise

Let your curiosity get the better of you as you wander down Abercrombie Lane and have your fortune told by a ‘cute pink furry ghost wearing a crown and snazzy green shoes’. 

Created by artist Katy B Plumber, the installation might just give you the answers you’ve been seeking. Or not.

For the gin lover… 

Wet your whistle at a new warehouse distillery 

With Hickson House

Those little hole-in-the-wall city joints are so 2019. Here’s a huge warehouse distillery and bar where you can spread out and kick back with a house-made collection of gins made with local NSW botanicals, aperitifs, whiskies and niche spirits.

Hickson House is opening late June in the old Saatchi and Saatchi garage and is the brainchild of Mikey Enright and Julian Train (The Duke of Clarence and The Barber Shop) plus Tim Stones (Manly Spirits).

You’ll get to choose from distillery tours, private dining, or just enjoy a tasty G&T at the bar.

LEGO of your worries and immerse yourself in child’s play 

With Brickman Cities powered by LEGO City

This one’s for the LEGO lovers! Showcasing five global cities; Dubai, London, New York, Tokyo and Sydney, the exhibition has over 20 models created from over 600,000 LEGO bricks. 

Created by LEGO Masters judge Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught, you can experience it at Sydney Tower Eye along with extras like a 4D LEGO movie, a SKYWALK and more.

Thirteen artists consider diverse approaches to the environment, storytelling and inter-generational learning through their works in The National 2021 at the MCA. Drawing on natural materials and processes, as well as found objects and detritus, they explore notions of planetary caretaking, and our relationship to place in an era of dramatic change.

Curated by Rachel Kent, the exhibition presents the latest ideas and forms in contemporary Australian art and is curated across the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Carriageworks and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
