Carriageworks’ Bay 22 is known for its raw industrial character - exposed steel, soaring ceilings, and vast open space. For this event, that backdrop became the starting point for a dramatic transformation.

As the last of five curated evening experiences for Premier Financial Alliance’s Sydney incentive program, this farewell dinner at Carriageworks rounded out an exciting week of immersive dining.

Hosting 500 guests from the United States, the event marked the end of the group’s journey through a series of unique dining experiences across the city. To deliver a seamless and premium experience, Laissez-Faire Catering, Simply Seated and AV1 worked as a unified delivery team, collaborating closely with program organisers The Travel Corner. Together, the partners looked beyond their core services, supporting the client with the many additional details required to bring each themed evening to life and ensure every guest experience felt intentional from the moment they entered the venue.

To ensure every element was executed precisely, the client secured a four-day venue hire, allowing extensive time for build, rehearsal, and refinement. From the initial sales process through to operational delivery, AV1 collaborated closely with Laissez-Faire and Simply Seated, orchestrating a seamless event through careful planning, coordinated bump-ins, and meticulous attention to detail.

The result was an extraordinary experience for 500 distinguished guests from the PFA Alliance, delivered with the timing, staffing, and culinary precision expected of a world-class gala comparable to an international Met Gala dinner.

Arrival: from industrial to indulgent

The theme, “Rags to Riches,” was brought to life through a carefully designed journey that moved guests from gritty industrial beginnings to a dazzling world of opulence.

Guests approached the venue through the unassuming exterior of Bay 22, setting the tone for the story about to unfold.

From there, the experience began to shift. Attendees walked down a blue carpet flanked by cold sparks, building anticipation as they entered the pre-function space. Waiting inside was a vibrant welcome performance by the Sydney Street Choir, setting an energetic tone for the evening ahead.

Above the crowd hung a striking 10 × 8 metre three-dimensional lighting feature, immediately transforming the industrial hall into a theatrical environment. A bespoke lighting designer played a key role in shaping the atmosphere, ensuring the lighting design carried the narrative from the raw industrial arrival through to the opulent reveal later in the evening.

The pre-function area was designed as a lively and immersive social space. A champagne tower bar, crowned by a giant chandelier, served as a focal point while guests mingled beneath it. Overhead, aerial performers poured champagne from chandeliers, adding a moment of spectacle and reinforcing the event’s transformation from humble beginnings to indulgent celebration.

Another highlight in the space was a large-scale artwork created with Be Challenged, showcasing a collaborative mosaic painted by delegates throughout the week. The installation measured 10 metres by 4 metres, made up of 250 individual tiles arranged in a 10 × 25 grid, forming a striking visual summary of the shared experiences leading up to the evening.

The grand reveal

When it was time to move into dinner, guests were escorted toward the main hall by The String Vixens, performing live on wireless violins and cellos as they moved through the crowd.

As the musicians reached the stage and began their performance, a dramatic drape-reveal unveiled the dining space beyond.

The transformation was breathtaking.

Suspended throughout the room were 87 chandeliers, rigged across 122 rigging points, creating a canopy of light above the tables. Complementing the chandeliers were 315 lighting fixtures, carefully programmed by the lighting designer to build atmosphere and enhance the evolving mood of the evening.

Eight 1:1 ratio LED screens, totalling 105 square metres of display, framed the room and delivered custom-designed content that followed the night’s narrative.

Designing the “riches”

Visual content leaned heavily into the theme of opulence - diamonds, sparkle, and shimmering textures - bringing the “riches” side of the story to life. The visuals evolved throughout the program, supporting performances and punctuating key moments across the evening.

To help guests easily navigate the room, digital table plans were incorporated into the arrival experience, blending practicality with polished presentation.

Performances that raised the energy

The evening’s entertainment matched the scale and spectacle of the room.

Tap Dogs delivered a high-energy performance that filled the hall with rhythm and movement, while the closing act by The Groove Academy turned the room into a full celebration. Smoke jets and dynamic lighting effects amplified the atmosphere, creating a finale packed with energy and excitement.

A story told through space

From the gritty exterior of Bay 22 to the glittering chandelier-filled dining hall, the event delivered a literal and visual journey from “rags” to “riches.”

Through large-scale lighting design, immersive staging, live performances, and carefully choreographed guest movement, the evening transformed Carriageworks into a world of spectacle - one that celebrated creativity, collaboration, and a little bit of theatrical excess along the way.

The client perspective

“I’ve been producing events around the world for 38 years, and this event for 500 people has been one of the most supported and fascinating programs I’ve ever delivered.

The three partners quickly became what I consider to be the dream team.”
